16 lpa li party! (Taken with instagram)
Recently, there has been lot of fuss about Sachin centuries. Well one can say that Sachin’s hundred have always been one of the most highlighted part of world cricket ever since the subcontinent became the epicenter of this game and batting went ahead of the bowling. The issue of recent talks have been his centuries for lost causes. In last 2 months Sachin has scored 3 international hundreds in matches not won by India. Some may say that he has most number of centuries in which the team won and some may say that after playing so many matches these things don’t matter. Let’s see what ODI records say about this :
Period Centuries Won Lost NR/Tie
1990-2002 33 27 5 1
2003-till date 15 6 8 1
Overall 48 33 13 2
Now this is something which everyone is not used to and that’s why everyone feels that he is scoring more loosing hundreds.
Cricket fraternity has a habit of taking out positive of everything. When teams loose the match, captain say they got some positives despite loosing the match. From all this one positive that can be drawn for sure is that it gives Sachin something to achieve in next 1-2 years i.e. score more winning hundreds. At least this would fill the void of “what to do” that seems to have been enlarging after the WC victory feat.
It’s just another IPL. Some more T20 matches. But for one man everything is not same. He is considered to one of the best talents of this batting dominant cricketing world, but even after playing over 250 matches he is never considered as one of the most experienced and mature player. Even if he displayed his character at different 22 yards strip many time, he was always one ruthless, amazing, young and slightly out of his head customer. But this time he is trying to change everything. A change to get more respect, a change for the career, a change for the leadership.

Yuvraj Singh has been part of the Indian cricket team for over 10 years now. During his a decade long career, he has been one of the most trusted match winner, a deadly batsman and a very energetic player on the field. Starting from Natwest trophy final, where he showcased his ability to turn in game in pressure situations, to T20 championship, where he showed how brutal he can be.
Cricketing fraternity acknowledges his abilities and bowlers know importance of his wicket. That’s why he has to transform himself many times to adjust according to the changing scenarios. First transformation is related to common problem in initial phase of young talented batsmen - lack of temperament. His second match against Australia was enough to show his mantle, but after that tournament he started struggling. Scoring 20s and 30s was common for him and continuing after that was difficult. As a result he was dropped from the Indian side. He worked on his this mental glitch and returned back to become a consistent match winner for the India. Who can forget his inning of 69 at Lords? World cup 2003 was just an extension of his new combination of mental strength combined with improved techniques.
As the time progressed and the some of the old geniuses of Indian batting started fading, everyone felt that era of new guns has started. Yuvraj was rewarded with a berth in test side. But alas! it remained a mystery to everyone that how a player with such composure just couldn’t manage in test cricket. He played some good innings, but that was not good enough for him. His showing in longer version of the game has another unseen effect. When the Indian team was looking for an effective leadership to take Indian team out of the doldrums in 2007, his name was considered. But unfortunately, that mysterious factor ruled him out and MS Dhoni started a new era of successes for Indian cricket in his leadership. This didn’t affect his ODI career and T20 became witness of his amazing abilities. He was more brutal to bowlers than ever, but less vulnerable too. One could just praise and look at his shots in a state of aw.
World cup campaign of India saw him entering into a new phase. Just when he was struggling and everyone was asking for his replacement with other young talented bones, he came up with his memorable tournament of life. For most of people it may seem that his performance in the World Cup 2011 was just another abrupt change in his career, but it isn’t so. The fact that he improved his bowling shows how seriously he has taken his game and felt need to fill all the voids. Such a change requires long time mental preparation also. However, he didn’t intend to end it just with change in his game, rather he wants to continue it with change in his character. One can notice it in his captaincy in matches in IPL and then in last match where he walked. He is now more stable in his head and clear in his thoughts. He is adopting characteristics from different personalities around him. Be it leadership skills from Mr. Cool Captain MS Dhoni or the morality from Master Blaster who has shown that situations can’t be greater that his principles.
Probably Yuvraj is trying to extend his vision for achieving more. We all know that a great player is not only able to quickly rectify his mistakes, but also learn good things from others to grow his stature. Yuvraj shows signs of this. He is one player to watch out for in future. We can witness another player rising to level of greats of the game.
